Top 5 Freight Companies To Own In Right Now

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- After imploding by more than half from the start of the year, buying J.C. Penney (JCP) may feel like stepping out on railroad tracks and stopping a freight train with your hand.

If you're too early, your account can get trampled faster than you can say "margin call," as many have found out. That's the reason why I've been critical of J.C. Penney, especially after they blindsided investors with a 38% share dilution that sent shares falling to multi-year lows. But as the facts change, so must our opinion.

The financial situation is the same, not much has materially improved, but instead of paying over $10 a share, we can now buy the retailer for under $8.50. In fact, I will show you how you can lower your risk to under $7 a share while leaving room of a possible 10% gain in about three months.

Best Life Sciences Companies To Watch For 2014

Another week of new all-time highs for the Dow Jones Industrial Average coupled with a good start to earnings season has given optimists little reason to fret. For skeptics like me, that's an opportunity to see whether companies have earned their current valuations.

Keep in mind that some companiesdeservetheir current valuations. Life sciences company Life Technologiesjumped to new highs this week following word that Thermo Fisher Scientificwill make a bid for the company, and that other private-equity firms are finalizing their bids. With Life Technologies having publicly announced a strategic review in January, it seems like a long-awaited buyout could be right around the corner for shareholders.

Still, other companies might deserve a kick in the pants. Here's a look at three companies that could be worth selling.

The returns on confectioner Tootsie Roll Industries (NYSE: TR  ) have certainly been sweet for investors over the past year. You have to go back to the summer of 2010 to find sugar prices that were as low as they are now, which has played a good part in helping Tootsie Roll keep that aspect of its costs down. But taking a bigger view of what's going on with Tootsie Roll and comparing that to its current valuation creates a sour taste in my mouth.

One technology player that insiders are loading up on here is Sigma Designs (SIGM), which provides integrated chipset solutions that serve as the foundation for consumer products including televisions, set-top boxes and video networking products. Insiders are buying this stock into decent weakness, since shares are down by 13.9% in the last three months.

Sigma Designs has a market cap of $165 million and an enterprise value of $98 million. This stock trades at a premium valuation, with a forward price-to-earnings of 29.88. Its estimated growth rate for this year is 114.2%, and for next year it's pegged at -5.9%. This is a cash-rich company, since the total cash position on its balance sheet is $61.74 million and its total debt is zero.

From a technical perspective, SIGM is currently trending below both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, which is a bearish sign. This stock recently gapped down from $5.50 to below $4.40 a share with heavy downside volume. Following that move, shares of SIGM went on to hit a new low of $4.04 a share. That said, this stock has started to rebound off that $4.04 low and it's now moving within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade.

If you're bullish on SIGM, then I would look for long-biased trades as long as this stock is trending above some near-term support at $4.48 or above its recent low of $4.04, and then once breaks out above some near-term overhead resistance at $4.85 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above that level with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 299,402 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then SIGM will set up to re-fill some of its previous gap down zone that started at $5.500 a share. This stock could even tag $5.75 to $6.20 a share if that gap gets filled with strong upside volume flows.

Top 5 Trucking Stocks To Own Right Now

An array of energy's sub-industries are making a fortune from America's natural gas boom.

Rigs, pipelines, rail, wastewater treatment, trucking, seismic imaging, well-site security... And a lot more opportunity is on the way, like the deal Kent just uncovered.

But perhaps the most unlikely beneficiary of the shale revolution is the coal industry.

After all, "King Coal" has been dethroned in recent years by the swelling supply - and bargain prices - of clean-burning natural gas. Indeed, thermal coal at the Australian port of Newcastle, the Asian benchmark price, is currently near lows not seen since November 2009.

Australian producers have especially been struggling. They've been cutting costs and paring back production because U.S. and large project financiers like the World Bank are pulling away from coal projects.

And overall, ever-increasing environmental regulation is discouraging coal-powered electricity.

But the dynamic is suddenly changing.

During the year ending December 31, 2012, the Company wrote new insurance in each of those jurisdictions in MGIC and/or MIC. The Company capitalized MIC to write new insurance in certain jurisdictions where MGIC no longer meets, and is unable to obtain a waiver of, those jurisdictionsminimum capital requirements. Private mortgage insurance covers losses from homeowner defaults on residential mortgage loans, reducing and, in some instances, eliminating the loss to the insured institution if the homeowner defaults.

Mortgage Insurance

Primary insurance provides mortgage default protection on individual loans and covers unpaid loan principal, delinquent interest and certain expenses associated with the default and subsequent foreclosure. Primary insurance is written on first mortgage loans secured by owner occupied single-family homes, which are one-to-four family homes and condominiums. Primary insurance is also written on first liens secured by non-owner occupied single-family homes, which are referred to in the home mortgage lending industry as investor loans, and on vacation or second homes. Primary coverage can be used on any type of residential mortgage loan instrument approved by the mortgage insurer.

When a borrower refinances a mortgage loan insured by the Company by paying it off in full with the proceeds of a new mortgage that is also insured by it, the insurance on that existing mortgage is cancelled, and insurance on the new mortgage is considered to be new primary insurance written. Therefore, continuation of its coverage fr! om a refinanced loan to a new loan results in both a cancellation of insurance and new insurance written. When a lender and borrower modify a loan rather than replace it with a new one, or enter into a new loan pursuant to a loan modification program, its insurance continues without being cancelled assuming that the Company consent to the modification or new loan.

The borrower mortgage loan instrument requires the borrower to pay the mortgage insurance premium. There are several payment plans available to the borrower, or lender, as the case may be. Under the monthly premium plan, the borrower or lender pays it a monthly premium payment to provide only one month of coverage. Under the annual premium plan, an annual premium is paid to it in advance, and it earns and recognizes the premium over the next 12 months of coverage, with annual renewal premiums paid in advance thereafter and earned over the subsequent 12 months of coverage. Under the single premium plan, the borrower or lender pays it a single payment covering a specified term exceeding twelve months.

Pool insurance is used as an additional credit enhancement for certain secondary market mortgage transactions. Pool insurance covers the excess of the loss on a defaulted mortgage loan which exceeds the claim payment under the primary coverage, if primary insurance is required on that mortgage loan, as well as the total loss on a defaulted mortgage loan which did not require primary insurance. Pool insurance is used as an additional credit enhancement for certain secondary market mortgage transactions. Pool insurance covers the excess of the loss on a defaulted mortgage loan, which exceeds the claim payment under the primary coverage, if primary insurance is required on that mortgage loan, as well as the total loss on a defaulted mortgage loan which did not require primary insurance. In general, the loans insured by it in Wall Street bulk transactions consisted of loans with reduced underwriting documentation; cash out! refinanc! es, which exceed the standard underwriting requirements of the Federal National Mortgage Association (Fannie Mae) and Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation (Freddie Mac) (collectively GSEs); A- loans; subprime loans, and jumbo loans.

Other Products and Services

The Company has participated in risk sharing arrangements with the GSEs and captive mortgage reinsurance arrangements with subsidiaries of certain mortgage lenders, which reinsure a portion of the risk on loans originated or serviced by the lenders, which have MGIC primary insurance. It provides information regarding captive mortgage reinsurance arrangements to the New York Department of Insurance (known as the New York Department of Financial Services), the Minnesota Department of Commerce and the Department of Housing and Urban Development, (HUD). It performs contract underwriting services for lenders, in which it judges whether the data relating to the borrower and the loan contained in the lender mortgage loan application file comply with the lender loan underwriting guidelines. It also provides an interface to submit data to the automated underwriting systems of the GSEs, which independently judge the data. These services are provided for loans, which require private mortgage insurance, as well as for loans that do not require private mortgage insurance. It provides mortgage services for the mortgage finance industry, such as portfolio retention and secondary marketing of mortgages.

The Company competes with Federal Housing Administration, Veterans Administration, PMI Mortgage Insurance Company, Genworth Mortgage Insurance Corporation, United Guaranty Residential Insurance Company, Radian Guaranty Inc., CMG Mortgage Insurance Company, and Essent Guaranty, Inc.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By George Putnam]

George Putnam: Sure. Well, MGIC Investment Corp. (MTG), which insures mortgages—residential mortgages—was really hammered back in 2007, 2008, and it struggled to, sort of, dig out of the hole that it got in from all of the defaults that individual homeowners made on their mortgages.

  • [By Jon C. Ogg]

MGIC Investment Corp. (NYSE: MTG) made the move to the Conviction Buy List on December 5, with a $10 price target. The company is benefiting from a solid improvement in credit and mortgage quality. With shares close to $8.40 now, the consensus price target is $8.81 and the 52-week trading range is $1.92 to $8.59. We noticed that the $10 price target is well under the street-high target of $13 on this stock.

On behalf of most of my clients in 2013, I chose to overweight tech and health care. However, I did so with areas that are traditionally less volatile. I continue to own Powershares Pharmaceuticals (PJP) and/or SPDR Select Healthcare (XLV). I’ve been a proponent of “old tech” with the attractive prices and dividends; First Trust NASDAQ Tech Dividend (TDIV) fits the bill. Additionally, I have remained faithful to iShares Small Cap Value (IJS) for small-cap exposure, rather than hop on the IWO express.

For veteran traders who've kept tabs on Sigma Labs Inc. (OTCMKTS:SGLB) over the past three months or so, it may be surprising to hear someone suggest it as a buy. Like so many other stocks of its ilk have done since the beginning of the organized market, SGLB went from (proverbially) zero to hero between late May and mid-July with a move from $0.025 to a peak of $0.118 only to fall back to the $0.04 level a couple of weeks later. It's the relatively common "one hit wonder", and if Sigma Labs followed the usual pattern of other small stocks that burned brilliantly for a few days, we wouldn't see anything particularly bullish from SGLB for a few months, if not years.

5 Best Warren Buffett Stocks To Buy Right Now

Blindly following moves by the largest money managers isn't advised; however, investors may gain valuable insight by looking behind the headlines when 2 fund manager titans have divergent views on stocks in the same industry.

While billionaire George Soros saw his Soros Fund Management LLC dumped positions in banking giantsJPMorgan Chase(NYSE: JPM), andCitiGroup(NYSE: C), Warren Buffett's Bershire Hathaway Group continued to hold huge stakes inWells Fargo & Co.(NYSE: WFC)andUS Bancorp(NYSE: USB).

Why such differing outlooks?

Wall Street versus Main Street banks
Behemoths Citigroup (NYSE: C  ) and JPMorgan Chase (NYSE: JPM  ) run worldwide empires reviled for exotic, financially engineered products, rapid-fire trading desks, and expensive miscues. These are among the "Wall Street banks." Some pundits argue that no one can really understand the inner workings; not even top management. They are not only "too big to fail," but perhaps "too big to manage."

Despite economic and political turmoil, equity markets performed well across the board in September of 2013 and over the trailing twelve months. The September gains reversed losses in August and also resulted in positive overall quarterly performance with a number of major indexes moving further into record territory. After disturbing the markets in May and June with comments that they may taper Quantitative Easing (QE), the Fed surprised investors with an announcement that it would not reduce its asset purchases in the near-term. The announcement removed fears that a continued rise in interest rates may stall the economic recovery, as seen by the market's negative reaction to the sharp rise in the 10-year Treasury rate in August of 2013. Investors were also comforted by improving fundamentals both domestically and abroad. The Eurozone may finally be emerging from its prolonged recession and a number of economic reports in the U.S. continue to show progress. Specifically, initial unemployment claims dropped to a multiyear low early in September and the housing market continued to improve, as evidenced by prices rising 12.4 percent year-over year, which along with the stock market's strength, has created a positive wealth effect for consumers. In response to this general economic improvement, consumer confidence increased at the end of September, and the index of leading economic indicators ticked up as well, suggesting that, absent the effects of politics, the recovery in the real economy was continuing. Our portfolios that focus on corporate restructuring (Keeley Small Cap Value, Keeley Small-Mid Cap Value, Keeley Mid Cap Value, Keeley All Cap Value, and Keeley Alternative Value) have all experienced a productive investment cycle with respect to their opportunity sets, and many of our holdings have posted impressive results in recent quarters. 3 Huge Stocks to Trade (or Not)

BALTIMORE (Stockpickr) -- Put down the 10-K filings and the stock screeners. It's time to take a break from the traditional methods of generating investment ideas. Instead, let the crowd do it for you.

>>5 Short-Squeeze Stocks Ready to Pop

From hedge funds to individual investors, scores of market participants are turning to social media to figure out which stocks are worth watching. It's a concept that's known as "crowdsourcing," and it uses the masses to identify emerging trends in the market.

Crowdsourcing has long been a popular tool for the advertising industry, but it also makes a lot of sense as an investment tool. After all, the market is completely driven by the supply and demand, so it can be valuable to see what names are trending among the crowd.

While some fund managers are already trying to leverage social media resources like Twitter to find algorithmic trading opportunities, for most investors, crowdsourcing works best as a starting point for investors who want a starting point in their analysis. Today, we'll leverage the power of the crowd to take a look at some of the most active stocks on the market today.

>>5 Blue-Chip Stocks to Trade Gains

These "most active" names are the most heavily-traded names on the market -- and often, uber-active names have some sort of a technical or fundamental catalyst driving investors' attention on shares. And when there's a big catalyst, there's often a trading opportunity.

Without further ado, here's a look at today's stocks.

Groupon

Nearest Resistance: $7

Nearest Support: $6

Catalyst: Technical Setup

Daily deal site Groupon (GRPN) is seeing a high-volume pullback this afternoon, down 2.5% after a big technical move in the last week. Groupon spent the start of 2014 in an unmistakable downtrend, but that slumping stock price changed at the start of June, when shares broke out above the trend line resistance level that's been haranguing shares this entire time. With the downtrend broken, more upside looks likely for GRPN.

Groupon is seeing added volume this week thanks to some fundamental news that prompted a breakout above shares' 50-day moving average, a level that's acted like resistance over the course of the downtrend. Now it's support. A recent uptrend in momentum, measured by 14-day RSI, adds some extra confidence to the buy signal in this name. Put a stop under $6 if you decide to jump in here.

Bristol-Myers Squibb

Nearest Resistance: $50

Nearest Support: $47

Catalyst: Drug Results

Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMY) is up nearly 3% on high volume as I write this afternoon, up following news that the firm was stopping its study on skin cancer drug nivolumab after the study showed clear positive results. The trial brings BMY one step closer to commercializing its melanoma treatment, and optimistic investors are piling into shares today.

Technically speaking, it's a little early to celebrate in shares of BMY. This stock has been making lower highs since March, and today's move higher is testing a key resistance level that's swatted shares down twice. If BMY can break out above $50 resistance, then it's a buy. Otherwise, sellers remain in control.

General Mills

Nearest Resistance: $54

Nearest Support: $51

Catalyst: Q4 Earnings

Cereal maker General Mills (GIS) is getting sold off 3.5% this afternoon, dragged lower by fourth-quarter earnings numbers that fell short of expectations. GIS announced profits of 67 cents for the quarter, but Wall Street was expecting a 72-cent payday. That miss is also triggering a big technical sell signal in GIS this afternoon.

GIS spent the last two months forming a textbook head and shoulders top setup, a pattern that triggered on a move through $54. We saw that move happen with yesterday's close, and it got confirmed with today's material breakdown. While the downside target from the head and shoulders is modest, a lack of meaningful support below means that shares could have a lot further to fall. Buyer beware.

    Monster Beverage (MNST)

Monster Beverage detracted from performance as revenue growth decelerated in the face of negative press related to the safety profile of energy drinks. Despite this transient headwind, the brand continues to take share, profitably, from traditional carbonated soft drinks. We continue to expect the Company's growth profile, over a multi-year period, will eclipse double-digits, despite periodic negative press. Energy drinks continue to be a highly disruptive offering in the beverage industry, driven by a generational shift in preference for caffeinated products. While the level of caffeine in the typical Monster Energy drink is higher than most traditional carbonated soft drinks, it has half as much (per ounce) than most popular coffee house offerings. We believe this relatively new value proposition should position Monster to continue taking share from traditional beverage incumbents.

Shares of Monster Beverage (NASDAQ: MNST  ) have been extra volatile lately, primarily because of regulatory concerns over the company's namesake energy drink. The Food and Drug Administration launched an investigation last year into the safety of such beverages, after a series of cases were filed against the company. The latest twist in the energy libation probe came this week when Monster filed a lawsuit in federal court against San Francisco's city attorney.
