5 Best Solar Stocks To Own Right Now

The boom in Alberta's oil sands was initially hailed as a hugely promising development for Canada's economy and energy security.

Recently, though, major threats challenging the economic viability of oil sands projects have begun to emerge. The main culprits are spiraling operating costs, depressed pricing for Western Canadian crude oil, and increased competition from shale plays in the U.S.

According to some commentators, if oil sands operators fail to overcome these challenges and especially if the price of crude oil sees a sustained decline, further investment in Alberta's oil sands industry could dry up.

For instance, Jeremy Grantham, co-founder and chief investment strategist at Boston-based investment firm GMO, argues that oil sands projects run the risk of becoming "stranded assets", unable to deliver sufficient rates of return to compensate for spiraling expenses. He explains:

I believe anyone investing in tar sands is very likely to end up with stranded assets in the next decade or two. Solar is getting cheaper by the minute, whereas petroleum is getting more expensive. It is only a matter of time before their expenses cross.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Roberto Pedone]

One under-$10 name that's starting to trend within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade is Orbitz Worldwide (OWW), an online travel company that uses innovative technology to enable leisure and business travelers to search for and book a range of travel products. This stock has been on fire so far in 2013, with shares up sharply by 263%.

If you take a look at the chart for Orbitz Worldwide, you'll notice that this stock recently gapped down and pulled back sharply from its high of $13.26 to its recent low of $9.41 a share. Shares of OWW have been finding support off that pullback and some buying interest right near its 50-day moving average of $9.57 a share. In fact, shares of OWW are spiking higher today right off that key technical level, and that spike is starting to push OWW within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in OWW if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $10.15 to $10.50 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 1.33 million shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then OWW will set up to re-fill its previous gap down zone from earlier this month that started near $12 a share.

Traders can look to buy OWW off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support levels at $9.42 to $9.04 a share. One can also buy OWW off strength once it takes out those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Orbitz Worldwide Inc.(OWW) posted a wider-than-expected first-quarter loss, but revenue outpaced analysts’ views. Shares rose more than 10% in recent premarket trading.

Shutterstock/Andrey Burmakin Folks are turning to the Internet more and more in planning business trips and personal getaways -- and investors are cashing in on the trend. Shares of Orbitz Worldwide (OWW) soared 18 percent last week after posting better than expected quarterly results. Revenue climbing 4 percent and profitability clocking in at 5 cents a share may not seem very impressive, but analysts were settling for the volatile travel portal to merely break even on flattish revenue growth. Strength in its hotel bookings were more than enough to offset weakness in airline reservations. Orbitz Worldwide's larger and faster-growing peers priceline.com (PCLN) and Expedia (EXPE) went along for the ride, climbing 7 percent and 4 percent respectively. They both went on to hit new all-time highs. Seeing an industry laggard start to grow profitably again -- and Orbitz Worldwide is calling for modest continued growth into 2014 -- was enough to get the market behind the popular providers of lodging, air travel, car rental, cruise and vacation package reservations. This isn't just a one-week phenomenon. Priceline and Expedia shares have soared 174 percent and 171 percent since the end of 2011. Orbitz Worldwide has also more than doubled in that time, and it's up a whopping 223 percent since the start of 2013. The Ins and Outs of Inn Outings Orbitz Worldwide's report would have been better if it wasn't held back by an 11 percent decline in airline ticket sales. Priceline and Expedia are growing their airfare sales, but modestly, compared to their hotel reservations. This isn't a surprise. Airlines have done a good job of marketing directly to passengers. There are a lot of people on frequent flyer programs, so they often head directly to an air carrier's website when it's time to book a trip. Pricing is also pretty competitive between airlines. There may not be a lot of carriers offering the desired route, but they are quick to respond to what rivals are doing. Th

    Calling all cash flows
When you are trying to buy the market's best stocks, it's worth checking up on your companies' free cash flow once a quarter or so, to see whether it bears any relationship to the net income in the headlines. That's what we do with this series. Today, we're checking in on Spartan Stores (Nasdaq: SPTN  ) , whose recent revenue and earnings are plotted below.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

…we believe the conventional grocers in our universe namely, Safeway, Supervalu, and SpartanNash (SPTN)re most at risk from Amazon.com’s expansion. Kroger should fare better due to its very strong price positioning and weighted-average market share positions. In addition, we believe that Kroger may actually end up as a net beneficiary of Amazon.com’s expansion, as grocers with lower market share positions (outside the top 5) are likely to exit/close, leaving more share to top players such as Kroger. The natural/organic specialty players are also better positioned to absorb Amazon.com’s expansion, with Whole Food Markets least at-risk due to its product mix (e.g. prepared foods), differentiated format, strong EBIT margins, and very strong balance sheet.

Margins matter. The more Spartan Stores (Nasdaq: SPTN  ) keeps of each buck it earns in revenue, the more money it has to invest in growth, fund new strategic plans, or (gasp!) distribute to shareholders. Healthy margins often separate pretenders from the best stocks in the market. That's why we check up on margins at least once a quarter in this series. I'm looking for the absolute numbers, so I can compare them to current and potential competitors, and any trend that may tell me how strong Spartan Stores's competitive position could be.

Toyota Bets Against Tesla With New Hydrogen Car

Toyota's new hydrogen fuel cell vehicle is expected to be called the Mirai. It will go on sale around the world next year. Source: Toyota.

It's really happening: Toyota's (NYSE: TM  ) new hydrogen fuel cell car will start arriving at dealers sometime next year.

Bloomberg reported this week that the car is expected to be called the "Mirai," the Japanese word for "the future". It won't be cheap: Toyota says it'll be priced around 7 million yen, about $68,000, when it goes on sale in Japan next spring. Sales in Europe and the U.S. will follow.

Unless governments are willing to offer some hefty incentives to buyers, It doesn't seem likely that Toyota will sell too many Mirais at that price.

But the Mirai is a big deal, because of what it says about Toyota's view on electric cars and its view on a company it has invested in, California's Tesla Motors (NASDAQ: TSLA  ) .

An electric car, minus the big battery pack
So what is this thing? First and foremost, the Toyota Mirai is an electric car, but it doesn't have the big, heavy battery packs used by cars such as Tesla's Model S and Nissan's (NASDAQOTH: NSANY  ) Leaf.

Instead, it has a fuel cell, a device that chemically converts the energy in hydrogen gas into electricity. It's a very clean process: the only "exhaust" from a hydrogen fuel cell is water vapor.

Hydrogen fuel cell cars like the Mirai have most of the advantages of battery-electric cars -- they're clean and quiet -- without the weight of the battery pack, which in a car like the Model S is very substantial.

But unlike a battery-electric car, which simply needs to be recharged, the Mirai will need "gas" -- hydrogen gas -- in order to operate. Right now, there are only a handful of hydrogen refueling stations in the U.S., but if the cars start to catch on, more will spring up quickly.

But why is Toyota making such an aggressive move toward this technology and away from battery-electric cars?

A big bet that puts Toyota at odds with Tesla
Simply put, Toyota thinks that current battery technology isn't good enough, and there are no promising breakthroughs on the horizon.

Toyota global research and development chief Mitsuhisa Kato recently told trade publication Automotive News that he thinks the short range and long recharging time of current battery-electric cars are huge disadvantages for the technology. As Kato sees it, a "Nobel Prize-winning type battery" would be needed to change his mind.

Under Kato, Toyota's research team has moved aggressively toward fuel cells -- so aggressively, reports have suggested, that the automaker has delayed the next-generation Prius in order to focus on the Mirai's development.

But Toyota's investment in the Mirai project seems like a big bet against a company like Tesla. And it's all the more striking because Toyota is one of Tesla's investors.

Of course, Tesla thinks Toyota's view is nonsense. CEO Elon Musk believes current battery technology is sufficient to make a fine car -- and Tesla's award-winning Model S sedan is a powerful argument in his favor.

10 Best Dow Dividend Stocks To Invest In 2015

Can battery-electric technology lead to great cars? Tesla's Model S is certainly a good one. Source: Tesla Motors.

Musk has derided hydrogen fuel cells as "fool cells" and dismisses the technology as a dead end. Of course, you'd expect that from a CEO of a battery-electric-car maker, who has a big interest in seeing batteries adopted more widely, but it's still telling that Tesla doesn't believe fuel cells hold any real promise.

Who's right?
It's not as if Toyota doesn't know anything about using batteries to propel a car. Toyota is, after all, the world's leading maker of hybrids. In terms of technology, developing a pure battery-electric car wouldn't be a daunting task for Toyota, as its plug-in hybrid Prius shows.

But giant Toyota has chosen another path, despite the success (so far) of upstart Tesla Motors.

Will this turn out to be the right move? Or are hydrogen fuel cells a technological dead end? Scroll down to leave a comment and share your thoughts.

3 Reasons Pfizer Inc.'s Stock Could Fall

Pfizer (NYSE: PFE  ) may be the largest pharmaceutical company in the world, but size isn't everything when it comes to developing and selling drugs.

Over the past 16 years Pfizer's stock hasn't budged on a nominal basis. That doesn't mean Pfizer's management hasn't been hard at work paying dividends and buying back its own stock to reward long-term shareholders. But the truth of the matter is that Pfizer's been muddling along for quite some time.

PFE Chart

PFE data by YCharts

There are quite a few catalysts on the horizon with the potential to push Pfizer's stock considerably higher, including the introduction of key new therapies and the potential for mergers and acquisitions, which could result in sizable cost synergies and possibly tax savings if Pfizer looks for a purchase overseas.

But there's another side to the Pfizer story -- one where it could head markedly lower than where it's trading right now. Of course, you usually won't find these behind the scenes catalysts capable of sending shares of Pfizer lower in its earnings reports. Instead, you need to be able to dig beneath the surface to discover the real reasons Pfizer stock could head lower. Below are outlined three such reasons.

However, it's prudent to mention that just because this piece presents a bearish stance on Pfizer today, there's no guarantee that the stock will go down. The market is made up of the opinions of millions upon millions of investors, who collectively determine where a stock will head next. Just keep that in mind as you read on.

Ongoing loss of exclusivity

The plus side to Pfizer's size is that its wide variety of drugs and therapeutic focuses helps to offset the loss of exclusivity on patented drugs.

Pfizer investor presentation slide. Source: Pfizer.

Drug patents, as a quick refresher, are issued by the Food and Drug Administration for 20 years, beginning when the FDA gives a company clearance to begin human clinical trials for a drug. Once that therapy reaches the market (assuming it passes all clinical studies and gets the nod of approval from the FDA) it often already has used up quite a few of those 20 years in the development process. However, the remaining exclusivity period is where pharmaceutical companies like Pfizer make the bulk of their profits.

In recent years there's been an acceleration  in the loss of exclusivity on key drugs for a number of large pharmaceutical companies, and Pfizer's drugs have been no different. Pfizer's seen its exclusivity for Lipitor, a drug which brought in more than $130 billion in lifetime sales, whisked away, along with Detrol, Viagra, Effexor, and Spiriva in select countries.

But Pfizer's not done dealing with exclusivity losses. In December of this year, Pfizer is set to lose patent exclusivity on arthritis drug Celebrex, which generates about $3 billion per year for the company and is its fourth-best-selling drug. Pfizer did attempt to extend this patent through litigation, but a U.S. federal court ruled against the company in March.

On top of the impending loss of Celebrex, Lyrica, the company's top-selling nerve and muscle pain drug, which could net $5 billion in sales this year, will lose patent protection by 2018. Pfizer simply can't replace these core drugs, and the expected loss of other less important drugs, quickly enough -- and according to Wall Street, its estimated full-year sales in 2017 of $49.6 billion will still be less than the $52.5 billion the company brought in in 2004!

A lack of catalysts and enthusiasm

There was a time when Pfizer was the drug company to own, as it was a stronghold of innovation. It had a handful of blockbuster drugs, that, when compounded with robust margins, were expected to drive years of impressive cash flow and stock gains.

Looking at the Pfizer of today, I have to scratch my head and wonder where the innovation went. According to the company, as of Aug. 7, 2014, it had 83 different projects in the works, including 34 early stage trials, 23 phase 2 studies, 20 late-stage trials, and six products currently under review by regulators. It also noted that 61 of its 83 studies involve a new molecular entity, 17 are supplemental indications, and five are for biosimilar compounds.

That sounds like a lot of research and development. But where's the payoff?

Johnson & Johnson conference all presentation slide. Sales in millions of cumulative U.S. dollars. Source: Johnson & Johnson.

Per a Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ  ) second-quarter conference call slide focusing on drugs launched since 2009, Pfizer only ranked sixth among the largest pharmaceutical companies based in the U.S., Europe, and Japan in terms of cumulative sales of new drugs, with $4.8 billion. By comparison, privately held Boehringer-Ingelheim, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Gilead Sciences, and Novartis all surpassed Pfizer, with Johnson & Johnson more than doubling Pfizer's cumulative new drug sales since 2009.

What's more, companies like Gilead Sciences are doing this with a far thinner product pipeline. Per Gilead's development page, which includes new entities as well as new proposed labels, it has around three-dozen compounds currently in development -- but it has still outsold Pfizer's newly approved drugs since 2009.

The emergence of breast cancer drug palbociclib could certainly help Pfizer out, but I fail to see where the catalysts beyond palbociclib are, and what Pfizer is going to do to excite investors about owning its stock again.

Insiders and institutions are selling

Lastly, taking a look at the people behind the curtain at Pfizer can offer clues about where the stock may be headed next.

According to Securities and Exchange Commission filings, over the past six months not a single director or officer has purchased Pfizer stock on the open market, though 13 different sales have occurred. In all fairness, selling for tax purposes isn't all too uncommon, so that could certainly represent the reasoning behind some of these dispositions. However, I had to go back more than a year to find the last time any insider purchased shares of Pfizer stock.

Source: Thetaxhaven via Flickr.

Why is this important? Because insiders have a better understanding of the company than investors or Wall Street will ever know. We can use their stock purchases and sales as clues that might help guide us toward the direction Pfizer will head next. What this lack of interest to buy implies is that company directors have very little faith in Pfizer's pipeline being able to lead its share price higher. If insiders aren't purchasing their company's own stock, why should investors?

But it isn't just insiders -- Wall Street has been bailing on Pfizer as well. Comparing the movement of shares from the previous quarter to the recently reported quarter, based on data from Thomson Financial, institutional investors sold more than 161 million shares of Pfizer stock. In the grand scheme of things, it was only a 3.6% reduction in institutional holdings, but it very well could signal a change in perception inside the company with the patent loss of Celebrex right around the corner.

Tying things together

Pfizer is, without question, nearing an inflection point for investors. On one hand, the company has a possible blockbuster cancer drug being readied for approval, and it could be just days, weeks, or months out from making a major merger or acquisition announcement. Then again, ongoing patent woes, an inability to translate R&D into sizable product revenue, and no visible signs of confidence from management or Wall Street cast a definite cloud over Pfizer's stock. Investors would be wise to consider both sides of the coin before placing a bet on Pfizer.

Palbociclib may offer blockbuster potential, but the growth opportunity behind this revolutionary technology may absolutely dwarf it
The best health care investors consistently reap gigantic profits by recognizing true potential earlier and more accurately than anyone else. Let me cut right to the chase. There is a product in development that will revolutionize not just how we treat a common chronic illness, but potentially the entire health industry. Analysts are already licking their chops at the sales potential. 3 reasons why Californians shun quake insurance

Why Californians don't buy quake insurance   Why Californians don't buy quake insurance NEW YORK (CNNMoney) Even though 90% of the earthquakes that strike the United States are located in California, only about 10% of homeowners there have earthquake insurance. What gives?

Here are three reasons why many quake-prone Californians shun insurance:

1) Quake damage rarely exceeds deductibles.

Some argue the insurance is not worth the money for homeowners. Earthquake insurance generally comes with a deductible of 15% of the home's value, according to John Rundle, a professor of physics at the University of California, Davis.

"Most homeowners will never exceed the deductible even if they do get damage," he said.

Most policies are purchased from the California Earthquake Authority, a privately funded, publicly managed organization that was created by the state legislature after severe losses in the Northridge quake threatened to send private insurers packing.

Hot Energy Companies To Own In Right Now

Glenn Pomeroy, CEO of CEA, said he would love to have a zero deductible, but that would make the premiums unaffordable for homeowners. Check out what you would pay on the CEA calculator.

The big deductibles mean money that would have gone to paying insurance premiums might be better spent being invested in temblor resistant home retrofits, according to Rundle. Homeowners could get their houses bolted to bedrock, for example, or braced and reinforced to prevent them from shaking apart.

2) Californians were slammed by the housing bust.

Many Californians were hurt by the real estate crisis and have little or no home equity -- or are underwater on their mortgages.

Jason Simpson, a computer programmer in Sherman Oaks, Calif., outside Los Angeles, bought his $690,000 home with a 3% down mortgage in 2008. The housing bust pushed him underwater -- he soon owed more on his loan than his home was worth.

"With no equity, there was no reason to drop $1,200 a year," he said.

If the ! big one had hit, he would have simply walked away from his mortgage. Now, however, as home prices have rebounded and he has added on to the house, he's preparing to buy insurance.

3) Mistrust of the California Earthquake Authority's support.

Another factor discouraging homeowners from buying coverage is that the CEA would stop paying claims if catastrophic earthquake losses exceed the the Authority's reserves.

Pomeroy said that homeowners shouldn't worry. Even though, just like any insurer, CEA would stop paying claims once its ability to pay was exceeded, it won't happen. CEA is very well capitalized, he said.

"We could handle two Northridges," he said, about the costliest earthquake in U.S. history.

"I don't lose sleep worrying whether we have enough money to pay claims, I worry because so many people don't have coverage."

Top High Tech Stocks For 2014

Both Paulson & Co. and P. Schoenfeld Asset Management, the two major MetroPCS (NYSE: TMUS  ) shareholders leading the opposition to the second-tier mobile operator's proposed merger with T-Mobile USA, have today announced their measured approval of the new terms offered by T-Mobile's parent company, Deutsche Telekom.

The revised offer from Deutsche Telekom includes a reduction of $3.8 billion in debt, and a 50-basis point reduction in the interest rate at which the combined MetroPCS/T-Mobile would need to repay that debt.

Paulson, holder of 9.9% of outstanding MetroPCS stock, said that it wants to review the revised proxy statement before finalizing its decision, but does intend to vote for the merger. Schoenfeld also said that, pending a final review of the new terms, it will withdraw its proxy soliciting opposition to the deal, and will not object to the merger.

"While the revised transaction terms do not reflect all the improvements we were seeking, we feel our central goal of making the combined PCS/T-Mobile company more competitive and valuable for all shareholders, including Deutsche Telekom, resulted in obtaining superior value for PCS shareholders and believe that these revised terms are the best alternative for PCS shareholders at this time," Schoenfeld said in a statement.

Hot US Companies For 2014

Right now, just about everything is on the table for BlackBerry (NASDAQ: BBRY  ) , as the company is still reeling from its recent disappointing earnings release last month. Shares have now dipped back into single-digit territory and are now roughly half of what they were when BlackBerry tapped 52-week highs in January over BB10 optimism. That hasn't discouraged one analyst. ACI Research analyst Ed Zabitsky has just started coverage on BlackBerry with a "strong buy" rating alongside a whopping $20 price target -- more than double current prices.

Who's Zabitsky?
Zabitsky was the first real Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) bear at a time when the Street was nearly unanimous in its bullishness. His "sell" rating on the Mac maker dates back to as early as 2009. Over the years, he's maintained his stance, while his bearish thesis has evolved. He also subsequently moved his rating to a more aggressive "sell short."
