Getty Images/Scott Olson The demise of Crocs (CROX), it seems, may have been greatly exaggerated. Remember the company's signature product? Close to a decade ago, those colorful, clunky resin clogs were all the rage. The company that made them couldn't sell the things fast enough, at one point reaching sales of 50 million pairs in 2007. Then fashion moved on, as it always does, and the economic slowdown started to bite into sales. Crocs plunged from a $168 mill! ion net profit in 2007 to a $185 million loss in 2008. In 2009, the company nearly ran out of cash and had a hard time making payroll. But Crocs' fortunes have improved. In its most recent quarter, the firm posted a loss, but it was narrower than the market was expecting. And it's found an investor that believes in its future -- private equity giant Blackstone Group (BX), which recently provided a $200 million cash investment in return for a block of preferred shares eventually convertible into a stake of around 13 percent of the company. Perhaps the time has come to take those old clogs out of the closet, dust them off, and slip them on for a stroll. Stepping It Up Fashion is highly susceptible to consumer whim. The hot item is never hot for very long, and once consumers move on, it can be hard for the company to recover. In Crocs' case, this was exacerbated by its limited product line -- almost exclusively the clogs. The company learned from its mistakes. Since consumer tastes moved out of clog-land, Crocs has significantly broadened its product line to 300 styles. It now offers boots, flip-flops, deck shoes and slip-ons akin to the casuals from VF Corp.'s (VFC) Vans subsidiary. In terms of profitability, Crocs recovered quickly from its time in the fashion wilderness. From that 2008 bottom-line deficit of $185 million, the company sliced its loss to $42 million the following year, then stepped back into the black in 2010 (to the tune of $68 million). After two straight years of declines, revenue

Yesterday, we asked if cold-weather demand for Ugg boots would boost Deckers Outdoor (DECK) financial results during the fourth quarter. We asked the wrong question.

    EPA

Deckers fourth-quarter results were warm and fuzzy. The footwear company said it earned $4.04 a share, beating the Street’s consensus for $3.80. The guidance for 2014 was well below analyst forecasts, however, so down goes the stock.

Canaccord Genuity’s Camilo Lyon and! Patrick ! O’Brien call the guidance “highly conservative.” They explain:

2014 guidance underwhelmed (implied EPS of $4.54 vs. our/consensus estimates of $5.22/$4.70), leaving us (and others) speculating about the level of conservatism embedded in it. Most notably, backlogs are up 24% at Dec. 31 (consistent with our channel/industry checks), yet it is less than 50% complete. Given that all retailers had a solid season with UGG, we have no reason to believe the remaining orders will change dramatically from those already in the book; thus making the 10% sales growth guide (and implied 4% wholesale growth), highly conservative we believe.

Lyon and O’Brien did, however, lower their price target on Deckers Outdoor to $103 from $111 to account for the lower forecast and higher expenses.

Shares of Deckers Outdoor have dropped 13% to $73.90, while Crocs (CROX) has gained 0.8% to $15.24, Steve Madden (SHOO) has dropped 0.1% to $36.52, Wolverine World Wide (WWW) has fallen 1.2% to $126.36 and Skechers (SKX) has fallen 1.6% to $33.82.

    Deckers Outdoor (DECK):

I covered Deckers in the above mentioned earnings season uncertainty article, mentioning that the UGG maker has been off to the races lately. Deckers jumped nicely on Wednesday, after a Piper Jaffray survey found that UGGs are still reasonating with upper income teens. However, while upping their price target and earnings estimates on the name, the firm maintained their Neutral rating on the stock. Also, their price target is $48, about $10 below where we are currently.

Top 10 Energy Stocks To Invest In 2014

I don't often follow pure income vehicles, but this is as good an opportunity as I've come across. In fact, it's "safe" enough for an 89-year-old mom. And it's IRA-friendly -- you can hold it in a retirement account. I think it will prove a great way to put some capital to work in our current ultra-low interest rate environment.

VOC Energy Trust (NYSE: VOC) went public in May 2011 at $21 per share. It has an interest in 881 producing wells in Texas and Kansas. VOC pays the costs of operating and drilling wells. VOC Partners, the sponsoring company, gets 20% of the net income from the wells. The remaining 80% goes to the trust, which pays it out to shareholders. (Come tax time, shareholders receive a 1099 -- not a K-1, thankfully. This makes VOC a good holding for a retirement account.)

Advisors' Opinion:

Why is there such a disconnect between oil and gasoline prices? Despite the fact that oil and gasoline make just about everything go and demand has been steadily rising for decades now, oil production has had difficulty keeping pace. And since 2005 most production growth has come from the increased exploitation of shale formations and hydraulic fracturing.

Since 2005, global production of crude oil has grown by 2.3 million barrels per day (MBPD) and over that same time period U.S. production of shale oil has grown by 3.5 MBPD. Not only is the U.S. essentially responsible for all the production global production growth since 2005, it has also made up from 1.2 MPBD of lost production elsewhere in the world.

While the gasoline price spike since October can be largely attributed to seasonal factors traveling increases in the holiday and summer seasons tight global oil production could result in higher gasoline prices becoming a fact of life. Here in the U.S. nearly 75 percent of the oil we consume goes to transportation and higher gasoline and other distillate prices are the only effect mechanism for rationing it.

That pricing mechanism, coupled with rapid advancements in drilling technologies and know-how, has also made it economical to produce once-untouchable oil reserves, such as those in deepwater or in shale formations and oil sands. It has also driven a huge push to increase global oil production in the coming years and created an opportunity to not only profit from the energy boom but also hedge your portfolio against the damaging impact of energy inflation.

One interesting play on that theme is Cameron International (NYSE: CAM). Cameron provides separation and pressure control equipment, flow control, compressors, valves and other equipment to the global energy industry, as well as the services to install and maintain it. About 20 percent of its $2.4 billion in first quarter revenue was generated through equipment and serv

But this too is starting to shift. If you look at the most-recent IPOs on the New York Stock Exchange, you'll find many corners of the energy industry represented:

There have also been a few MLP-related funds to hit the market this year, including Global X Junior MLP ETFand Neuberger Berman MLP Income Fund.

  • [By Robert Rapier] There were a half a dozen initial public offerings (IPOs) by master limited partnerships in the first half of the year, and all but one are now in the green while one has nearly doubled in value.

The first MLP IPO of 2013 debuted on Jan. 15. USA Compression Partners (NYSE: USAC), which I mentioned in last week’s issue, provides compression services for the oil and gas industry. Units have advanced 36 percent since the IPO, and at the current price yield 7.3 percent.

The day after the USA Compression Partners IPO, CVR Refining (NYSE: CVRR) made its debut.  CVRR was spun off from CVR Energy (NYSE: CVI), and both companies remain majority-owned by Carl Icahn. CVR Refining’s primary assets are two refineries located in Kansas and Oklahoma with a combined processing capacity of approximately 185,000 barrels per day (bpd). These refineries are strategically located near the major Cushing, Oklahoma shipment and storage hub, with easy access to discounted feedstock from the nearby Permian basin, as well as the Bakken shale and Canadian oil sands.

But refiners have struggled with diminished margins in 2013 because of a much lower Brent-WTI differential. After the recently concluded second quarter, CVRR declared a distribution of $1.35 per unit, bringing its per-unit distributions for the first half of the year to $2.93. At the same time, CVR Refining lowered its annual distribution target to a range of $4.10 to $4.80 per unit. This was lower than the outlook issued in March, when it foresaw annual distributions of $5.50 to $6.50. CVRR units slid on the news, and are presently trading slightly below the $25 IPO price. The lower end of the revised forecast implies distributions of $1.17 per unit in the second half of the year, for a forward annualized yield of 10 percent based on the recent $23.50 unit price.

Best Beverage Companies To Invest In Right Now

Countless numbers of consumers re-evaluated their spending patterns after the recent economic downturn. One way people have decided to trim the fat in their budgets is by ditching their once-beloved, big-branded foods and beverages. Where does this leave name-brand manufacturers?

Commoditizing categories
Deloitte's annual American Pantry Study shows brand loyalty has dropped for yet another year, indicating a shrinking number of consumers who are remaining faithful to their favorite big-branded goods. In fact, 90% of consumers are reaching for private labels instead of big brands.

The study identified four distinct brand loyalty archetypes, the most concerning being "category brands with declining loyalty." The categories that ranked the worst off in this archetype were salad dressings and cookies. Does this mean big-branded dressing and cookie manufacturers are approaching their own expiration dates?

That's a huge issue for Kraft Foods Group (NASDAQ: KRFT  ) and Mondelez International (NASDAQ: MDLZ  ) . After its October 2012 split from Mondelez, Kraft retained the vast smorgasbord of salad dressing brands. But even aside from dressings, many categories in which Kraft competes already face commoditization and serious private-label threats. Another drawback for Kraft is that it's confined to mature North American markets, a factor limiting its long-term growth potential.

Top 5 Defense Stocks To Invest In 2014

According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's Institute for 21st Century Energy, the increase in oil and gas production last year from fracking has significantly reduced our national security risks by increasing our own energy security. The index, which follows 37 separate metrics, showed a risk reduction in 26 of those metrics thanks to the boom in unconventional oil and gas production. With Syrian worries driving oil prices higher, securing our own energy is more important than ever. The good news is that, looking ahead, the institute is now projecting that our energy risks will be further reduced in the future as the United States produces more energy.

The Bakken and the Eagle Ford continue to lead the charge toward a more secure future. Those two areas have helped drive U.S. oil production to 7.6 million barrels per day, which is the highest output in 24 years. By producing more oil here at home, we have done what the Department of Defense hasn't been able to do, which is to secure our future sources of energy.

Yet there is a fourth major competitor in the commercial aircraft market -- Bombardier (NASDAQOTH: BDRAF  ) -- and it has its own advanced-technology airplane. The company's CSeries plane is expected to make its first flight as early as this week. Yet the CSeries put up a goose egg at the Paris Air Show, failing to notch a single order. While Bombardier has nearly 200 firm orders for the CSeries, the company will rapidly burn through that backlog once it starts CSeries mass production.

Why are there talks about slowing down?
In one of my previous articles where I was speaking of Bombardier (BDRAF) troubles because of the drop in oil prices, I had mentioned that analysts are expecting the oil prices to drop as low as $60 a barrel. It seems that time has come as Brent Crude oil price touched $60.79 a barrel according to NASDAQ. The following is chart shows the fluctuations in the Brent Crude Oil Spot Price. The latest spot price is as of December 15, 2014.

    2. Declining growth rate (see the table below):

  • [By WWW.DAILYFINANCE.COM]

Back in 1996, it was pretty easy to steal money from people on the Internet. You put up an item for sale on a site like eBay (EBAY), you took people's money, and you never sent the thing they bought. (Really, that's the first Internet scam article I wrote almost 20 years ago). Scams have become a lot more sophisticated since then, but two things have remained incredibly constant during the past two decades. First, victims almost always send money using a method that offers no recourse, such as wiring the funds. And when I write an article about the latest con, a chorus of too-clever-by-half people will scream, "That could never happen to me!" When I encounter people in that second vocal group, I often quiz them about their extensive portfolio of overpriced extended warranties, time shares and underperforming mutual funds, and gently remind them that the folks who think they're too smart to get cheated are often the easiest marks. One of the first things a trained con man or woman will do to victims is lavish them with praise. ("I can't believe this great deal I'm giving you," says the auto dealer as he walks away with your money.) So if you think you can't be scammed, you are probably next in line. And for that other group, I say simply, "Stop wiring money to people." Doesn't matter how elaborate the cover story is. Because I've interviewed thousands of victims during the past two decades, I'm often asked why people fall for scams or corporate rip-offs. Here are my top five reasons. "People are stupid," a popular refrain, is never my answer. On the other hand, "Because people think they are smart" is No. 1. 1. If It Sounds Too Good to Be True, It's Your Fault Like a good wrestler, con artists know how to use a person's strength against them. One hard-to-confess truth about nearly every scam victim I've ever spoken to is this: We all have a little criminal in us. There's a piece of us that's anxious to get in on an investment before anyone else knows abo

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By WWW.DAILYFINANCE.COM]

CYNK Technology (CYNK), the mysterious over-the-counter stock that at one point broke a $6 billion market cap, dropped roughly 80 percent in its first trades after a Securities and Exchange Commission halt. The SEC halted CYNK for two weeks following a massive rise in the stock's value -- it had been worth only a few cents per share in June, but it jumped above $21 on July 10. The Belize-based CYNK Technology supposedly operates a social networking site, but filings indicate it only has one employee and virtually no assets. Experts told CNBC the week of the SEC halt that they expected CYNK to fall precipitously after reopening, and its first day of trading is proving those predictions correct. When it was halted, the stock was worth just less than $14 per share, and is now below $3 a share after briefly hovering around $5 earlier Friday morning. An OTC Markets spokeswoman told Reuters that CYNK's shares were not trading on its platform, but were occurring over the phone. Earlier this week Reuters reported that OTC's CEO did not expect CYNK to trade on its platform at all after reopening, as no brokerages would file the required paperwork for the stock to trade on their exchanges. An SEC spokesman said that the organization cannot comment on the status of a company after a suspension period ends, citing an online explanation of the process. That document notes that broker-dealers may not solicit investors to trade the previously suspended OTC stock until they satisfy several regulatory requirements. The SEC warned, however, that "unsolicited" trading may occur after a reopening -- as CYNK is now seeing -- but "even though such trading is allowed, it can be very risky for investors without current and reliable information about the company."

Equally difficult as the issue of editorial independence is what will happen to joint ventures between Time Inc. magazine online operations and CNN.com. As an example, for many years, Fortune.com and Money.com have been under the umbrella of CNNMoney.com. Neither of these Time Inc. properties has any traffic of its own to speak of. Time Inc. will need to not only build independent Web operations for Fortune and Money (sources say that this process will begin in late May), it will need to drive readers to them in the extremely crowded online business and financial sector. Perion will keep its senior management team intact: Josef Mandelbaum will remain its CEO and Yacov Kaufman its CFO. Three years after co-founder Larry Page took the reins back as chief executive officer, his team of lieutenants is clearly undergoing a refresh. On Thursday, Google (GOOG) announced the surprise departure of its veteran business chief Nikesh Arora, who will become vice chairman of SoftBank. Arora represents the latest in a string of personnel changes within Google's top ranks over the past 16 months, affecting major divisions from Youtube to its popular Android mobile software. In some cases, the moves appear to be the result of personal circumstances or opportunities. Arora's role at SoftBank represents a promotion, analysts say. But a half-dozen other top executives have left or switched roles in recent months. They included the departed Vic Gundotra, who oversaw the Google Plus social network; and Salar Kamangar, who was CEO of YouTube before moving to another role. Fresh faces now pictured on Google's senior management page include Craig Barratt, whose responsibilities include efforts building broadband networks and delivering wireless Internet access, and Lorraine Twohill, the head of marketing who was recently promoted to senior vice president. It is unclear what motivated each individual move. But analysts say they suggest a general desire to have fresh eyes on key parts of the business as Google pursues growth areas. "The opportunities they're chasing are so much bigger now," said BGC Partners analyst Colin Gillis. "They weren't digging up fiber four years ago. They didn't have Chromecast," he said, referring to Google's ultra-high-speed fiber network and a device for streaming Web content to televisions. Although oil prices ended the year at multi year lows, now would be the time to take a closer look atsmall cap gas compression or enhanced oil recovery (EOR) stocks likeUsa Compression Partners LP (NYSE: USAC), CSI Compressco LP (NASDAQ: CCLP) and Propell Technologies Group Inc (OTCBB: PROP) before oil and gas prices inevitably rise again. To begin with, natural gas compression services are used to transport natural gas and specifically to getnatural gas from low-pressure wells into gathering systems, storage and processing facilitiesas well as to maintain production as reservoir pressure declines. Compression servicesare also used to extract gas fromunconventional natural gas sources like shale plays. Meanwhile,so-called enhanced oil recovery or EOR is just a generic term for the techniques used for increasing the amount of crude oil that can be extracted from an oil field with potential methods including steam flood and water flood injectionor hydraulic fracturing(so-called fracking). Naturally, demand for compression services and EOR technologies would be impacted by oil and gas commodity prices.

While the ongoing implosion of crude oil prices has put high-profile names like Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE:CHK) and Linn Energy LLC (NASDAQ:LINE) in the limelight - and the hot seat - all the noise surrounding those and other names may have distracted investors from looking at the oil rout in an opportunistic light rather than through the panic-colored glasses that have proven so damaging to the likes of LINE and CHK. Rather than fret over how difficult life was going to be for Linn Energy, Chesapeake Energy, and all their peers now that the price of oil was at or below the cost of drilling for it, investors should have been looking at companies that make drilling for oil cheaper and more cost-effective. Although oil prices are at multi year lows, nowmight be the time to start taking a closer look atsmall cap gas compression or enhanced oil recovery (EOR) stocks like TETRA Technologies, Inc (NYSE: TTI), Exterran Holdings, Inc (NYSE: EXH) and Propell Technologies Group Inc (OTCBB: PROP)as oil and natural gas prices willinevitably rise once again. To start with, natural gas compression services areneeded to transport natural gas from low-pressure wells into gathering systems, storage and processing facilitiesas well as to maintain production as reservoir pressure declines. In addition, compression servicesare used to extract gas fromunconventional natural gas sources like shale plays. As for so-called enhanced oil recovery or EOR, itsa generic term for the techniques used for increasing the amount of crude oil that can be extracted from an oil field with these potential methods including steam flood and water flood injectionor hydraulic fracturing(so-called fracking). Naturally, demand for compression services and EOR technologies are impacted by (the temporary)low oil and gas commodity prices and so are the share prices for publicly traded stocks in the space.
