Back in 1996, it was pretty easy to steal money from people on the Internet. You put up an item for sale on a site like eBay (EBAY), you took people's money, and you never sent the thing they bought. (Really, that's the first Internet scam article I wrote almost 20 years ago). Scams have become a lot more sophisticated since then, but two things have remained incredibly constant during the past two decades. First, victims almost always send money using a method that offers no recourse, such as wiring the funds. And when I write an article about the latest con, a chorus of too-clever-by-half people will scream, "That could never happen to me!" When I encounter people in that second vocal group, I often quiz them about their extensive portfolio of overpriced extended warranties, time shares and underperforming mutual funds, and gently remind them that the folks who think they're too smart to get cheated are often the easiest marks. One of the first things a trained con man or woman will do to victims is lavish them with praise. ("I can't believe this great deal I'm giving you," says the auto dealer as he walks away with your money.) So if you think you can't be scammed, you are probably next in line. And for that other group, I say simply, "Stop wiring money to people." Doesn't matter how elaborate the cover story is. Because I've interviewed thousands of victims during the past two decades, I'm often asked why people fall for scams or corporate rip-offs. Here are my top five reasons. "People are stupid," a popular refrain, is never my answer. On the other hand, "Because people think they are smart" is No. 1. 1. If It Sounds Too Good to Be True, It's Your Fault Like a good wrestler, con artists know how to use a person's strength against them. One hard-to-confess truth about nearly every scam victim I've ever spoken to is this: We all have a little criminal in us. There's a piece of us that's anxious to get in on an investment before anyone else knows abo

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By WWW.DAILYFINANCE.COM]

CYNK Technology (CYNK), the mysterious over-the-counter stock that at one point broke a $6 billion market cap, dropped roughly 80 percent in its first trades after a Securities and Exchange Commission halt. The SEC halted CYNK for two weeks following a massive rise in the stock's value -- it had been worth only a few cents per share in June, but it jumped above $21 on July 10. The Belize-based CYNK Technology supposedly operates a social networking site, but filings indicate it only has one employee and virtually no assets. Experts told CNBC the week of the SEC halt that they expected CYNK to fall precipitously after reopening, and its first day of trading is proving those predictions correct. When it was halted, the stock was worth just less than $14 per share, and is now below $3 a share after briefly hovering around $5 earlier Friday morning. An OTC Markets spokeswoman told Reuters that CYNK's shares were not trading on its platform, but were occurring over the phone. Earlier this week Reuters reported that OTC's CEO did not expect CYNK to trade on its platform at all after reopening, as no brokerages would file the required paperwork for the stock to trade on their exchanges. An SEC spokesman said that the organization cannot comment on the status of a company after a suspension period ends, citing an online explanation of the process. That document notes that broker-dealers may not solicit investors to trade the previously suspended OTC stock until they satisfy several regulatory requirements. The SEC warned, however, that "unsolicited" trading may occur after a reopening -- as CYNK is now seeing -- but "even though such trading is allowed, it can be very risky for investors without current and reliable information about the company."

Equally difficult as the issue of editorial independence is what will happen to joint ventures between Time Inc. magazine online operations and CNN.com. As an example, for many years, Fortune.com and Money.com have been under the umbrella of CNNMoney.com. Neither of these Time Inc. properties has any traffic of its own to speak of. Time Inc. will need to not only build independent Web operations for Fortune and Money (sources say that this process will begin in late May), it will need to drive readers to them in the extremely crowded online business and financial sector. This sector includes the financial content sites of the AOL Inc. (NYSE: AOL), Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ: YHOO) and MSN, as well as the sites of news services Reuters and Bloomberg. It should be pointed out that Time Inc. and CNN did severe their Sports Illustrated partnership in the second quarter of 2012, apparently with satisfactory results for Time, Inc.

InterActiveCorp (IACI) bought Ask.com for $1.85 billion in 2005. The new Perion will be worth only about 40% of that. After the merger, Perion will leapfrog its much larger rivals: Babylon and AVG (AVG). Finally, Perion should be able to increase its operating margins as it can spread its SG&A costs over a much larger base (Conduit EBITDA margin is 32% vs. Perion's 23%). Perion will keep its senior management team intact: Josef Mandelbaum will remain its CEO and Yacov Kaufman its CFO. Perion has successfully orchestrated a roll-up acquisitions of privately-held Sweetpacks and Smilebox, so I have high confidence that they know how to integrate a new business.

Getty Images SAN FRANCISCO -- Google's reshuffle of its senior ranks underscores the Internet company's evolving business ambitions, analysts say. Three years after co-founder Larry Page took the reins back as chief executive officer, his team of lieutenants is clearly undergoing a refresh. On Thursday, Google (GOOG) announced the surprise departure of its veteran business chief Nikesh Arora, who will become vice chairman of SoftBank. Arora represents the latest in a string of personnel changes within Google's top ranks over the past 16 months, affecting major divisions from Youtube to its popular Android mobile software. In some cases, the moves appear to be the result of personal circumstances or opportunities. Arora's role at SoftBank represents a promotion, analysts say. But a half-dozen other top executives have left or switched roles in recent months. They included the departed Vic Gundotra, who oversaw the Google Plus social network; and Salar Kamangar, who was CEO of YouTube before moving to another role. Fresh faces now pictured on Google's senior management page include Craig Barratt, whose responsibilities include efforts building broadband networks and delivering wireless Internet access, and Lorraine Twohill, the head of marketing who was recently promoted to senior vice president. It is unclear what motivated each individual move. But analysts say they suggest a general desire to have fresh eyes on key parts of the business as Google pursues growth areas. "The opportunities they're chasing are so much bigger now," said BGC Partners analyst Colin Gillis. "They weren't digging up fiber four years ago. They didn't have Chromecast," he said, referring to Google's ultra-high-speed fiber network and a device for streaming Web content to televisions. Google's transition to smartphones represents a key success in recent years. Now, it is seeking to extend Android's reach into televisions, smartwatches and cars. This week, Google announced t

Although oil prices ended the year at multi year lows, now would be the time to take a closer look atsmall cap gas compression or enhanced oil recovery (EOR) stocks likeUsa Compression Partners LP (NYSE: USAC), CSI Compressco LP (NASDAQ: CCLP) and Propell Technologies Group Inc (OTCBB: PROP) before oil and gas prices inevitably rise again. To begin with, natural gas compression services are used to transport natural gas and specifically to getnatural gas from low-pressure wells into gathering systems, storage and processing facilitiesas well as to maintain production as reservoir pressure declines. Compression servicesare also used to extract gas fromunconventional natural gas sources like shale plays. Meanwhile,so-called enhanced oil recovery or EOR is just a generic term for the techniques used for increasing the amount of crude oil that can be extracted from an oil field with potential methods including steam flood and water flood injectionor hydraulic fracturing(so-called fracking). Naturally, demand for compression services and EOR technologies would be impacted by oil and gas commodity prices.

While the ongoing implosion of crude oil prices has put high-profile names like Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE:CHK) and Linn Energy LLC (NASDAQ:LINE) in the limelight - and the hot seat - all the noise surrounding those and other names may have distracted investors from looking at the oil rout in an opportunistic light rather than through the panic-colored glasses that have proven so damaging to the likes of LINE and CHK. Rather than fret over how difficult life was going to be for Linn Energy, Chesapeake Energy, and all their peers now that the price of oil was at or below the cost of drilling for it, investors should have been looking at companies that make drilling for oil cheaper and more cost-effective. Enter Propell Technologies Group Inc. (OTCBB:PROP).
